Board of Education Trustee Areas
The County Education Office supports 20 widely diverse school districts and 10 Charter schools throughout Santa Barbara County. The Office provides direct instruction to the county’s most vulnerable students through alternative, special education, and early childhood education programs.
With a budget that allocates over 86% to student services, professional development for educators and fiscal services for districts, SBCEO values are clearly prioritized; supporting our County’s students, teachers and schools.
Although members of the SBCEO board are not responsible for direct oversight of each school’s staffing or curriculum specifics, duties that come with the position include setting SBCEO board policies, approving SBCEO’s Local Control Accountability Plans and budget approval.
The County School Board guarantees that SBCEO finances are well managed and solvent through an ongoing, articulated approval process of the annual budget.
In addition, it is our sworn duty to serve as an appeals board for Inter-district Transfer request denials, student expulsions and Charter School applications.
We receive monthly presentations on some of the 200 critical programs that SBCEO oversees that support high quality education. assessments and evaluations, teachers training and credentialing support, and are made aware of additional funding awarded to the County Education Office to provide a means to innovate and continuously improve educational opportunities through competitive grants.
We regularly monitor the safety of SB County school facilities for students and teachers alike, as evidenced through Williams Valenzuela Act reporting.
We acknowledge excellence among staff and faculty with special recognitions, we visit traditional, Court and Community schools, attend student performances and graduations, celebrate successes and hold ourselves accountable for representing our trustee areas at every turn. Through a collaborative mosaic of local partnerships, non-profits, and community programs SBCEO leverages connection to lift up the whole student and the teachers who work tirelessly to address their needs.
As a trustee of the County Education Office, I hold the unique interests of all students at the very center of decision-making while advocating for students, families and strong schools in every district throughout Santa Barbara County.
